How long it takes
Siliguri to Gangtok is about 114 km and usually 4.5 to 5.5 hours by car; from NJP or Bagdogra add 15 to 20 minutes. Traffic near Sevoke and in Gangtok town can add more at peak times.
The road
NH10 leaves the plains at Sevoke, crosses the Teesta near the Coronation Bridge area and follows the river through Teesta Bazaar and Melli to Rangpo, where you enter Sikkim, then climbs via Singtam to Gangtok.
Monsoon and closures
From June to September landslides can close parts of NH10, sometimes for hours. One-way traffic and repair stretches are common. Check our Road Status page on the day and leave a margin before trains and flights.
The alternative road
When NH10 is blocked, cabs can use the longer road through the Dooars, Lava and Rhenock (NH717A). It adds several hours, so drivers use it only when NH10 is closed.
Sikkim rules
Indian travellers need no permit for Gangtok. Inside Gangtok and for Tsomgo Lake, Nathula and North Sikkim, local rules may require Sikkim-registered vehicles and permits; we arrange these as separate trips from Gangtok.
